Incident Details: New Year Celebration Gone Wrong

The incident came to light when a Facebook user shared a video showing five teenagers firing guns, including an Uzi, during their New Year celebrations. The post was tagged at Phuang Malai Temple, indicating that the group were locals. The video, which has since been deleted, caused concern among viewers due to the dangerous and reckless behavior.

Arrest and Investigation

On January 6, 2025, Police Major General Sompop Kuhawichanant, the Commander of Samut Songkhram Provincial Police, and Police Colonel Sayam Insuwanono, Superintendent of Mueang Samut Songkhram Police Station, held a press conference to announce the arrests.

The individuals arrested were identified as Paitoon (47), Thanyatep (26), Thanyathorn (28), Wayu (26), Naret (37), Jakkrit (26), and Surachai (21). The group was found in possession of six blank-firing guns.

Investigation and Police Action

The incident occurred near Wat Phuang Malai in the Mueang district of Samut Songkhram, during the transition from 2024 to 2025. Following the incident, Mueang Samut Songkhram Police investigators identified the suspects and obtained a search warrant on January 3. Although the search revealed no illegal items, the suspects contacted the police later that day to surrender their firearms, which were identified as blank-firing guns.

The group was fined 500 baht (approximately US$14) each for causing a public nuisance without reasonable cause. They assured authorities that they would not engage in such behavior again.

Apology and Regret

The teenagers expressed deep regret for their actions, explaining that they had been drinking in celebration of the New Year, which led to their reckless behavior. They admitted to purchasing the blank guns online and firing them out of excitement without anticipating the consequences. After realizing the gravity of their actions, they removed the video within three hours and publicly apologized for causing alarm.

The group’s actions serve as a reminder of the dangers of irresponsible behavior, especially when combined with alcohol, and the importance of considering the consequences of one’s actions, particularly when posting content online.
